- THE gardens back then Were swarming with bugs, mosquitoes and black flies caterpillars and slugs. BUT, that's where the cucumbers and cabbages grew:.It was a farm boy's sweet life and a pleasant one, too! THERE was hoeing and weeding of the new onion beds and watering soil where would spring cabbage heads.
